Facing a pair of key conference doubleheaders this week, the Lovell Mustangs took care of business Friday, sweeping the Powell Pioneers in two close battles at home in Cowley, then dropped two to Cody Tuesday, also at home.
The home stretch started well for the Mustangs as they prevailed in a pair of nail-biters against rival Powell Friday, edging the Pioneers 4-3 in game one and 10-8 in game two.
Manager Michael Jameson said Friday’s wins were great for the team, but there’s still a long season to go.

Young Mustangs sweep Thermopolis on the road

The surging Lovell Mustangs C American Legion Baseball team pulled off a sweep at Thermopolis Saturday, stopping the home team 10-2 and 11-5.
The Mustangs improved their record to 13-10 on the season and have won 10 of their last 13 games.
“Our C team played tough in Thermop on Saturday,” head coach Greg Rael said. “We won both, which was great to see, especially for our younger group. They had some kids that could hit the ball, but our pitchers were dealing Saturday -- a lot of strikeouts.

Majors all-stars drop heartbreaker in bracket play

The Big Horn County Little League Majors all-stars went 1-2 as the host of the All-Stars and Stripes Tournament held in Lovell over the weekend.
In the opening game, the Mustangs’ bats were hot as they collected 10 hits in the four innings it took to the 10-run-rule Greybull, 10-0.
Dax Mangus led the way at the plate, collecting two hits including an inside-the-park home run, and he drove in five runs.
Landon Asay also had a pair of hits in the game and a couple of RBIs.

Minors all-stars go 1-2 in opening tournament

The Big Horn County Little League Minors all-stars went 1-2 at the All-Stars and Stripes tournament held in Lovell over the weekend.
On Friday, Lovell started strong by dominating Greybull 16-1 in the opening game.
The Mustangs connected for 12 hits in the match, led by Jace Jameson’s two inside-the-park home runs that drove in five runs.
Hudson Morgan, Patrick Jameson and Spencer Walker also had a pair of hits in the game while James Henderson, Taysom Butler, Luke Bischoff and Logan Timpany added one each.

Lovell Rod and Gun Club holds three shoots

The Lovell Rod and Gun Club hosted three shoots for Mustang Days this year, and although the turnout was relatively light for each event, those who participated enjoyed the contests.
First up was the youth .22 shoot Saturday afternoon, with eight kids participating. Degan Wilson won the 12-and-under division, nailing 15 of 20 targets, followed by Illyena Atkinson.
