Maintaining empathy will make your life sparkle

It’s hard to maintain the sparkle long term in a relationship, to remain empathic to your partner (and your family) as you wander your way along that ever-lengthening everyday path. The everyday grind wears off the gleam. And those little burrs become more and more defined. And dig deeper and deeper.

The lady who delivers our mail everyday has a difficult job. Long hours. Six days a week. Wyoming weather and wind. Dogs. Dogs. Dogs. Plus the mountains of packages from Amazon. We just take her for granted.
Why not leave a simple treat for her inside the mailbox now and then as a friendly gesture of appreciation?

You meet the nicest people from Wyoming in Texas

The other day I was grocery shopping at Sprouts when I happened across a guy wearing a T-shirt with a Wyoming bucking bronco. I’ve been in Texas for more than 30 years, and I never pass a chance to say hello to someone from Wyoming.
Sure enough, this guy was from Evanston, and though I can’t remember his name, I knew his dad and grandparents. It was fun to catch up with Evanston and Wyoming in general. Six and a half million people live in the Metroplex, and it is always great to run into someone from Wyoming.

You know that saying about how to live? By sliding into home plate, dust flying and jumping up and yelling, “What a ride?” What they do not tell you is, your young body might absorb it then but when you put a lot of miles behind you, your body will not thank you later, but your mind will.

Every family has one, claimed or not. In every family there is a black sheep. And then there’s the clown. And don’t forget the gloom and doom spoiler. There may be these personalities as well: a scammer, a selfish, a selfless and a self-interested. Maybe combinations of some traits in one member. The dynamics are there, constant, predictable, infuriatingly so.
For those of us who marry, we inherit a second set of dynamics to navigate and fit ourselves into.

A few weeks ago, a Lovell Chronicle column caught the eye of a faithful reader. The Thanksgiving Week column asked whether we, as a nation, are grateful and in a frame of mind to give thanks.
Though we live in the greatest nation on earth, with boundless blessings, freedoms and advantages, we sometimes would rather complain about things – and each other – than simply appreciating the many blessings in our lives, the column posited.

For those of you that don’t know, on Wednesdays, the outside world ceases to exist and the only thing that matters is getting the newspaper put together and published each week. Those days can get rather hectic as we finish writing stories, identify photos, type cutlines, build pages and proofread every word. Oftentimes, “Who’s writing this week’s column?” or “What should I write a column about?” is the last piece of that puzzle.

That was one of the first questions my now-husband-then-guy-I-was-attracted-to asked me. It puzzled me at first. How does a middle-aged woman who is stumbling along in life, trusting in God to guide her, answer such a ridiculous question?
