Young Grizzlies drop four in opening tournaments

The rebuilding Rocky Mountain Grizzlies showed their youth and inexperience during the season-opening tournaments at Wright and Glenrock last week, dropping all four games, though three of the four were close.
They then knocked off intra-district rival Burlington on the road Tuesday evening to pick up their first win of the season.
Friday at the Coal Miners Classic in Wright, the Grizz fell to Kaycee 50-46 and host Wright 80-23. Saturday at the Herder Classic in Glenrock, Rocky fell to Lusk 57-48 and host Glenrock 51-42.

Lady Mustangs place second at conference tourney

The Lovell eighth-grade Lady Mustang basketball team concluded a strong season with a second-place finish at the Yellowstone Conference Tournament in Worland Saturday.
Coach Josey Allen’s Mustangs opened the tournament with a 29-16 win over Riverton. The Lady Mustangs forged a 17-10 halftime lead, then held a 19-14 lead after a defense dominated third. Lovell pulled away with a 10-6 fourth quarter advantage.

Rocky ‘A’ team second at conference hoops tournament

The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzly A and B teams concluded the 2023 season at their respective Big Horn Basin Conference tournaments Saturday, with the A team (mostly eighth graders) in Shoshoni and the seventh-grade/B squad in Basin.
Coach Doug Arnold’s A team played for the championship in Shoshoni, playing to a 1-1 record following a first-round bye.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results for this group of young Lady Grizz,” Arnold said.

Grizzlies finish strong at conference tournament with 12 in the top two

The Rocky Mountain Middle School wrestling team wrapped up a successful 2023 season Saturday with a strong finish at the Big Horn Basin Conference Tournament in Thermopolis, placing sixth out of 10 teams behind only much larger schools.
The Grizz tallied 100 points on the day, just behind Lovell with 107.5 points and Riverton with 112. Powell won the tournament going away with 226 points, followed by Lander and Cody. Rocky finished ahead of Thermopolis, Worland, Greybull and Shoshoni.

As the season comes to a close, the Lovell Mustangs wrapped up the regular season with matches at a triangular tournament in Cowley November 28 before heading to Thermopolis for the Big Horn Basin Conference Meet on Saturday.

Talented Bulldogs look to take the next step in ’23-24

The Lovell boys basketball team took a big step forward last season under new head coach Shane Durtsche, forging a 12-15 record, qualifying for the state tournament and even winning a game at State following the program’s 6-15 season in 2021-22.
Now in his second year, Durtsche is looking forward to even better things ahead for the Bulldogs, noting that practice has gone very well so far.
“I’m very impressed so far with their effort and attitude and the work the kids have put in,” Durtsche said.

Bulldog grapplers look to challenge for top three finish at State

Despite losing two all-state wrestlers to graduation after a successful season that saw the Lovell Bulldogs place fourth at State, Lovell head coach Ty Hecker expects even greater things for his squad in ’23-24 with a talented and experienced squad returning.
The Bulldogs placed fourth at the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament in Casper with 123.5 points, not far behind third-place Big Piney with 150 points. Kemmerer and Moorcroft placed first and second, respectively.

Strong programs like the Rocky Mountain boys basketball team tend to reload rather than rebuild over the years, but with a huge amount of talent graduating over the last three seasons having taken its toll on the program, veteran coach Pat Winland said it’s a mixed bag this season.
“It’s kind of a rebuilding and reloading mode because of the way our conference is,” Winland said. “Almost everyone else is doing the same thing. All of the teams lost all-state players and key contributors.”

Consistency the key to ‘next step’ for Lady Bulldogs

After digging out of a two-year hole, the Lovell Lady Bulldogs have been much more competitive on the hardwood over the past two season, but now they need to take the next step, coach Chris Edwards said this week ahead of the Bridger Valley Tournament in Lyman and Mountain View, and that will require more consistent play, he added.

Rocky girls basketball program builds character

Being a good basketball player goes beyond shining on the court, said Justin Moss, head girls basketball coach at Rocky Mountain High School, who is newly minted in the head coaching role. “To be good humans. People that look out for each other and care about people and, really, just be pillars in this society is what we look for,” Moss said. “We’ve kind of had some great people come through our program that are just doing wonderful things in their world after they’ve gone through our Rocky Mountain Grizzly program.”
